    Understanding The Differences: CPA, Accountant, Bookkeeper.

    While a CPA, accountants, and bookkeepers can all help your business’s financial operations run smoother than it may without professional assistance there are many differences between what each role entails and what they do to help your business.

    Bookkeepers: Recording the Data

    A bookkeeper’s primary duties include so called “transactional” or day-to-day financial operations;

    Things like recording transactions, managing accounts payable and accounts receivable and payroll are all examples of what a bookkeeper may do. Typically, bookkeepers utilize software, like Quickbooks, to organize and keep track of the data.

    Accountants: Interpreting the Data

    Accountant, on the other hand, usually use the data generated by a bookkeeper to generate financial statements and reports regarding the overall state of a business’s finances. Many accountants also preform tasks that a bookkeeper does but in addition an accountant is responsible for creating;

    income statements, balance sheets, additional financial reports, strategic planning and audits.

    Certified Public Accountants (CPA)

    Certified Public Accountants is an accountant and provides similar services as any other accountant; however, they also posses a state license that certifies them to prepare financial statements for publicly traded companies.

    A company that is publicly traded, a company that sells stocks, are required to have a Certified Public Accountant create and review financial statements for the shareholders so they have an accurate report of the company’s financial situation.

    The costs and time associated with obtaining such certifications are often reflected in the higher costs CPA’s charge for their services and the fact that larger companies are required to have them in order to publicly sell shares of their company.
